    Who is the package for?

    The NPL Football Academy is for those who wish to combine progression in football, whilst having the opportunity to gain educational sporting qualifications.

    This vocational element of the programme is tailored for those who wish to combine progression in football, either playing or coaching, with the dynamic area of physical education, sports coaching and sports science.

    What qualifications can I achieve?

    There are a range of qualifications that are available to students on the course. The core modules of the education programme focus on developing knowledge and understanding of sports science, leadership and coaching skills to enhance sports performance.

    Students can achieve the following qualifications:

    • NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership
    • BTEC Level 3 in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)
    • BTEC Level 3 in Sport (Performance and Excellence)

    What progression is there once the course is completed?

    The course above can lead to further studies in higher education (such as university or our own degree pathway that enables you to continue to train and play matches for your academy) or direct employment opportunities in a variety of sectors, such as sports coaching or sports management. On the football side of the programme, students have the opportunity to play for semi-professional/professional clubs as well as the pathway to study, coach and play in the United States or elsewhere on an international scholarship.

    Where will the course be based?

    The education will be based at each individual football club or a local facility nominated by the club with a dedicated college tutor delivering the qualification.

    At certain times throughout the duration of the programme, specialist facilities may also be used for elements of the course, in particular the ‘Instruction of Physical Activity and Exercise’ module; which provides a foundation of knowledge in Personal Training.

    What other opportunities are there?

    Students will be given the opportunity to build up their own CV and take part in work experience at the football clubs, gaining experience on match days and non match days, through a wide range of tasks which could include coaching, administration, promotion, marketing, etc; and will differ from club to club.

    Full time and the course is free.

    Course length

    2 years.

    What are the aims of this course?

    If you want to pursue a career in coaching, teaching, sports therapy or are planning to progress on to a higher education sports-related degree, this course is ideal for you. You will gain an in-depth understanding of sports science, coaching and fitness.

    What Level 3 options are there?

    Depending on your grades you will study one of the following:

    • Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels)
    • Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels)

    Each club is different, for clarification on which qualification your club will study, please speak to your area manager.

    What are the areas covered by this course?

    Units across the three options include:

    • Sports development
    • Sports coaching
    • Psychology for sports performance
    • Profiling sports performance
    • Principles of anatomy and physiology
    • The physiology of fitness
    • Practical team sport
    • Rules, regulations and officiating
    • Sports nutrition
    • Sport as a business
    • Assessing risk in sport
    • Sports injuries
    • Leadership in sport and analysis of sports performance

    What qualifications do I need to get into this course?

    Three GCSE’s A-C, with one preferably Maths or English, or a BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) with a Merit grade.

    How is the course assessed?

    You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including assignments and practical activities.

    Each qualification option is worth a certain amount of credits:

    • Diploma (120 credits)
    • Extended Diploma (180 credits)

    Each unit you complete is worth either 5 or 10 credits and you are marked on how well you have achieved that unit – graded either a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Your overall qualification will then be calculated against the UCAS Tariff points table, for entry into Higher Education.

    Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete this course?

    On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 in Sport. 

    What will I be able to go on to do after I’ve completed this course?

    On completion of the BTEC Level 3 in Sport you can progress onto a sports related degree (we proudly run our own degree programmes with Loughborough College) or another appropriate higher education course. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course through our education provider.

    What are the career opportunities?

    This course can lead to work in sports coaching, teaching or work in a leisure centre or gym. In addition, it could provide entry into business and management within the leisure industry. Advice and guidance will be provided during your course by our education providers and also can be discussed at parent/guardian evenings.

    How many UCAS points can I achieve?

    Whether you study the Diploma or Extended Diploma, UCAS points are available for each grade. The highest amount available is 168 which is the equivalent of three A* grades at A-Level. Please see the table below for full details.

    What are the aims of this course?

    If you are interested in sport, this course provides the knowledge, skills and experience needed to gain an entry level job in the sports and leisure industry or to progress onto further education.

    What are the areas covered by this course?

    The course  includes the study of the following areas, for example:

    • Preparing for and leading activity sessions
    • Supporting the work of the team and organisation
    • Promoting health, safety and welfare in activity leisure and recreation
    • Contributing to participants’ personal and social development

    What qualifications do I need to get into this course?

    Entry Level and GCSE’s D-G (3-1 in new grading)

    How is the course assessed?

    You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including practical tasks and assignments.

    Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete this course?

    On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Activity Leadership. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English if needed and also develop important skills – like communication, team working, presentation and problem solving.

    What will I be able to go on to do after I’ve completed this course?

    On completion of this course you can progress onto a BTEC Level 3 in Sport at the club you are at. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course by our education provider.

    Higher Education

    Whether you study the Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 A level), Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels) or Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels) there are opportunities to progress to Higher Education establishments, such as university.

    Each unit that you study is worth a certain amount of credits (5 or 10) and you are marked on how well you have achieved that unit (Pass, Merit, Distinction) which calculates UCAS Tariff Points, which support your Higher Education applications.

    American Scholarships

    Throughout your time on the programme, we will be bringing in external companies who specialise in providing scholarships in the United States of America. An attractive pathway for those students who perform well both academically and on the football pitch.

    Our degree programme

    We are proud to run our own Blended Learning Degree Programmes, where you can study towards a BSC in Sports Coaching or BA in Sports Management, with Loughborough College.

    During your time on our programme you will be eligible to take part in football training by a UEFA B trained coach and play for your club’s Academy in the NPL Football Academy League.

    The entry requirements for these courses are both 56 UCAS points while Maths and English at grade C or above is essential. You will be treated as an independent learner where you will take part in weekly webinars (online seminars) and complete online tasks.

    This programme enables you to complete a degree programme without the restraints of attending daily sessions at a University.
